Disclaimer: I'm a huge fan of political novels (and movies & TV shows) centered on the President.Especially if a strong woman is the President, or candidate, or even if she's a VP (actual, or candidate).
I've not been so enamored of First Ladies, however.
Being a "position" of no real power, and basically just a housewife/hostess, it's been transformed in my lifetime beyond these "empty" traditional cliches.
It probably began with Edith Wilson, who basically became President in the final years of husband Woodrow's terms.
Eleanor Roosevelt redefined the role further.
Then such power players as Rosalynn Carter, Nancy Reagan, and finally Hillary Clinton further empowered the position.
In "The Reluctant First Lady", we have a woman--Ashley Taylor--who says "NO!" to playing the role!
She's married to Michael Taylor, who campaigns, and wins, feeling he can dissuade his wife from her decision.
But just minutes after winning the election, she reiterates what she'd been telling him all along--"I hate politics!".
Most of the novel follows their path through the political and personal consequences of her decision.
Using real-life media people (Tom Brokaw, Brian Williams, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, David Letterman, etc) in a fictional work is a bit risky, but Ellick pulls it off here with startling accuracy!
I've always felt the 3 keys to a successful relationship are the 3 C's--caring, commitment, and communication.
The Taylor's marriage seems to have all three.
Yet there's a scene toward the end that made me think Michael falls a bit short in the "caring" department.
In fact, I thought his behavior was abominable--or Neanderthal, in more modern terminology.
As to Ms Taylor's "solution" to their problem, I must say I wish it had been more definitive--in her favor!
I ALMOST reduced my rating to 4 stars because of that!
One question only touched on its periphery in the book is the question of what will happen when we have our first FEMALE President, with the concomitant "First Gentleman".
Would everything play out the same way?
But as a fan of these type political novels (movies, TV shows), I strongly recommend it.

The Reluctant First Lady eBook Venita Ellick Reviews
I'm normally not a reader of fiction and it usually takes me a couple of months to read a book, but this book grabbed me from the moment the main character moved to New York and I read it in one week. The book does have a political tone but is mostly about an independent female who bucks political tradition. Congratulations to the author on her first publication. I loved it. Can't wait for her next book.
The Reluctant First Lady is an excellent book. When I read a book if it doesn't capture me right away I will usually just not read it. I loved this book. It was a page turner for me, I just felt like I was right in the midst of this "issue". I am normally not a very political person but I found myself sitting alone in my living room having a debate on this topic and I was getting fired up about "the reluctant first lady". I'm very liberal but I wasn't feeling very liberal about this . I love that I could read a book and find emotions that I didn't know I had. This author is really a great writer and I hope there will be many, many more books to come...sooner than later..
"The world" is used to seeing the First Lady, whether she be the wife of the PM of the UK, the Premier of France, Russia (they hide them away there ) or the USA - anywhere - being the hostess with the mostest, Velcroed to his side. Carefully presented, clothes no doubt pre-approved by the minders, she smiles sweetly and grits her teeth - or not - as she waits for whatever the dreary occasion to be over.
This First Lady, however, is another kettle of fish. She is determined not to be cast in the mold which is expected of her, and the ructions which ensue when she bucks the system and insists on following her own career, are the plot of this novel The writing is good, the author gets into the mind of Ashley, the Lady. However, I was a little disappointed with certain aspects of the plot.
The presidential husband is pristine, except for his jealous rages. The woman, Paula, who is drafted in to be the official protocol manager - a job created to cover Ashley's perceived perfidy - is apparently a barracuda who would shed her husband in a heartbeat if she thought she could get Michael, for herself. There is no chapter attending this scenario, nothing shown of the husband's relationship (albeit formal) with this woman or of Ashley and Paula having "words." Does Michael slip, even momentarily? No, he is perfect. Doesn't even have a straying thought in his head.
Ashley, on the other hand, is pursued by a wealthy playboy who is intent on luring her into his clutches - and the reader is asked to believe she is unaware of this.
There are noticeably weak points in this plot which, IMO, needed to be addressed.
SPOILER ALERT ***********************************
Going to his home on her own (but with the Secret Service Agents) when her boss and his wife are called away for a family emergency is understandable as this is an official function, but following him into a room to "see his art work" on her own without her Agents or anyone else....really, this woman is a twit.
Likewise, the photographer who finds her alone at the log cabin (which sounds more like a log mansion) who says he has found her for his employer - who is the employer? The danger with which the photographer threatens her is never followed up by anyone, neither is the reader privvy to the name of the employer. It could be the wealthy playboy but who knows? Is there a sequel in the offing? This incident makes the novel feel a few chapters shy of being complete.
A good read which - overall - was enjoyable, but which let itself down in a few spots.
