Ex-FBI agent Connor McCloud can never forget the day he was set up to die at the hands of trusted friend and fellow agent Ed Riggs. Hard justice and loyalty to his badge have cost Connor what he wants most - Ed's shy, studious daughter Erin. He can never have her now, but her beauty still haunts and torments his every waking hour and his most fevered erotic dreams. But now that his old enemy Kurt Novak has returned, Connor is prepared to do anything to protect the vulnerable young woman from a killer who has vowed a brutal payback . . . a killer with a predator's lethal patience.

I really didn't like this one. There was too too much unsensational sex, and I love sex scenes. Connor walked around with a hard on for most of the book. For a guy who was FBI for about 8 years he's incredibly stupid about spy stuff or McKenna did a really poor job of building his character to show how his depression affected his judgment. Early on he considers that his car might be tagged but he NEVER checks. He doesn't look for electronic devices in rooms, apts, etc. EVER and yet he persists in believing that the bad guy, Novak, is after them. In fact, other than carrying a gun and checking the apartment before Erin enters I can't remember him doing anything proactive.

For a woman that has been stalked by a bad guy, had her father thrown in prison, and seeing the sex video of her dad and his mistress online Erin's really naive or in denial. Which maybe I could believe if that characteristic had played out in other parts of her life but she's very realistic about her and her family's problems.

Connor is portrayed as a macho jerk most of the time, I never really got a sense of him as a human being. The characters all felt disjointed and the book centered on sex and the violence and evil of Novak and his gang. There are lots of carefully described plot pieces around Novak building a new identity for himself and none of those pieces are used in the overall plot. The people who die for Novak's revenge plan get a cameo but nothing ever comes of it. For instance, the assassin who kills the two henchmen and the body double that "becomes" Novak; there was a lot of detail on the assassin's work and the exactitude with which he was ordered to commit the crime but it never came to anything other than being detail. I kept expecting him not to get paid, or killed by Novak, because he forgot to turn left instead of right or something. Then there's the guy who switches the DNA record and his elaborate death, his wife is sick with cancer... With so many plot details you generally expect them to be discovered or lead to something else. They were dead ends other than to portray Novak's evil mind and his careful planning; and were excessive for that. The end was kind of a let down, and what was with the girl kiss at the end?

Ex-FBI agent, Connor McCloud will never forget the day he was set up to die at the hands of his fellow agent and trusted friend, Ed Riggs. This shatters his hopes of any future with Ed's daughter Erin. He has always had a thing for Erin and still finds himself thinking about her constantly. Kurt Novak, an old enemy (the worst) is back and threatening the very person who Connor will go to the ends of the earth for. Novak is a very patient and lethal man. Erin has always had secret fantasies about Connor but that was before he sent her father to jail. Her whole world is on the brink and it could be the end of her family. Will they be able to protect themselves from a man like Novak?
Erin has long had a crush on Connor and he has felt the same way. Circumstances with her dad and his arrest deter Connor when he was about to make his move for Erin. Now he steps in to protect her and the crush turns into some hot sex and Erin discovers her wild side. The chemistry between these two is smoking hot! You can feel how much they want each other!

Erin is a curator for ancient Celtic artifacts and takes; the author goes into great detail and certainly did her homework regarding dates, pieces and values. Unfortunately, this along with the villains in the book really was very taxing for me. I thought the details were a little much as I felt like I was taking a ancient artifact class and or the plot just drown on.

Next up in the series is Connor's brother...will see how this one goes.
This novel is a re read for me, first time was 10/20/13 but I did not share a review at that time. I am once again enjoying a Shannon McKenna book. Re reads to me are like revisiting old friends and Ms. McKenna's book, Standing in the Shadows, makes that journey a delight to a seasoned romance reader.

The premise of this story is about Connor McCloud, ex FBI agent, who was hurt and in a comma for over a year in a horrible attempt to kill him by a double crossing agent. Because of his permanent injuries he is now reduced to taking photos of cheating spouses for his brother's Private Investigation firm. The one constant in Connors life is his overwhelming attraction, love, for Erin since she was seventeen, 10 years ago. Her dad was the agent that got Connor injured and his partner killed. When he finds Erin's life in danger from an old nemeses seeking revenge, he will stop at nothing to keep the only woman he ever loved safe.

The passion that Connor and Erin share, burn up the pages as I read their love story. I was totally involved with their journey of self discovery, healing and their expressing of long held and hidden passions. What a good love story. Can not wait to read book three, Out of Control, Davy McCloud's story.
