Misery Stephen King 9780450417399 Books

This was my first Stephen King novel. I must admit that it will not be my last. After seeing the film, I picked up the book and was startled to see how the story is even more detailed and gruesome and frightening than the film. The humor in the film was necessary for audience sales. The book is more true to life and detailed in human feeling and experience. King has an uncanny way of getting you into the heads of the characters and their emotions. I was terrified by Annie Wilkes and petrified for Paul Sheldon. It is not a light-hearted book and will have you trapped throughout. The imagery is visceral and the writing crisp. Be ready to be terrified and entertained.

Misery Stephen King 9780450417399 Books Reviews

Going into this, I knew the baseline to the story due to having seen the movie as a kid, but I didn’t remember it very well and had never read the book, although it’d been on my TBR for ages. I absolutely love Kathy Bates, and plan to rewatch it again soon since I finished the book!

After deciding to read a new King book every month starting with the month after my last birthday, I pushed this up on my list and set out to read it with the #kingbuddyreads group on Instagram. And what a wild ride!

Annie Wilkes is absolutely bananas. She’s a delusional, paranoid, violent psychotic and is completely unpredictable. Having the ‘evil’ in the book be an actual person rather than a paranormal entity always scares me a bit more. People have the ability to do some really messed up things, even without the help of the supernatural, and MISERY is a prime example of that. Annie’s character brought on conflicting senses of empathy and disgust while I was reading, as I felt both hatred/fear of her, and very sad for her. What a miserable life she leads!

This book caused me to cringe and even gasp out loud at different points. The pain that Paul Sheldon endures is incredible, and his determination and perseverance throughout the abuse he experiences is shocking. From emotional torment to physical, I felt so bad for him.

Another note on the book some people mentioned disliking the book-within-a-book format, but I enjoyed the in-book Misery as much as the rest of the story. The fact that this book is about a writer and his biggest fan’s obsession with him, and his most popular work, wouldn’t really be complete – to me – if I didn’t get to experience a taste of that work — even if it’s unlike the rest of the series, admittedly, and written under extreme duress. 😛

Definitely 5 stars from me! I’d absolutely recommend this to anyone – or maybe anyone not especially squeamish, yikes!
Paul Sheldon, a talented author famous mostly for his Misery books (think bodice-ripper romance), has put the finishing touches on his Great American novel, Fast Cars, and, heavily intoxicated, drives down the Colorado Rockies in the midst of a snowstorm. As you would imagine, he wrecks his car and is rescued by his Number 1 Fan, Annie Wilkes. But something isn't quite right with Annie Wilkes...

These past few years, I've been struggling to find books I love, turning to recommendations, old favorites, long-time authors, all in the event of relearning why I love to read. I bought this book based on a recommendation; I saw the movie before reading, and based on that experience (Kathy Bates and James Caan are fantastic!), I decided to read this as a scary Halloween read - and my treadmill read.

And I really, truly enjoyed myself. The cast of characters is short - basically only Paul and Annie - but it's really clear why Stephen King is such a well-loved author. He really writes with craft, creating these characters so deftly. Annie and Paul are complex people, really fascinating to read about and people who, while you don't like them or want to be their friends, you definitely want to see what happens to them next.

I wish I could go on and on about this, as I do with my negative reviews, but as anyone who reviews books know, it's hard to say everything that's great about a book. A book, when well written and intriguing, makes you forget where you are and what time it is. Reading a bad book, you feel every agonizing page and are constantly looking back to see how far away the end is.

I know not all of King's works are great, but this one was a nice addition to my season of "Falling in Love with Reading", and because of that, I would definitely not mind reading more of his works in the future.
