I think this is a positive take on VL…and perhaps it does provide a glimpse into us humans, while revealing a darker side. I LIKE IT…a very interesting and engrossing story! It was a page-turner. I wanted to continue reading it until the end. So I did!!
Get a glimpse of tomorrow, and I mean tomorrow, because someone's going to read this and make this app. This incredibly fast-paced story sharpens the lens on the near future, when everyone is recording their lives through their “smart glasses.” It's written more like a screenplay than a short story, mostly told through the app's point of view, from those creating content to those watching it.

After years of just watching life pass him by, Dylan, a self-proclaimed geek, starts recording his "story", and chaos quickly ensues. A budding romance, a suicide, a murder are all seen from a first-person perspective, and it's a relentless rollercoaster ride. I was completely hooked, read it in one sitting, and then read it aloud to my love. Don't miss this. And God yes, I hope someone is smart enough to option it for a movie!
Wow! *EDtv* on steroids! *Virtual Life* is a rocket-fast, prophetic story of a Google Glass app that lets everyone and anyone live-stream their lives. This is the highest calibre of technothriller. *Virtual Life* incorporates today's technology, with a view to the future of what smart glasses hold in store for us all. It presents a dark and totally arresting vision of our societal obsession with being seen getting Views, Likes, Favorites, Comments—anything to be noticed and acknowledged, and to achieve a kind of immortality through the most intrusive kind of fame. I love Jeri's work, and with *Virtual Life* she's done it again. Highly recommended read!
"All of us, whoever our parents may be, have to forge our own characters in the end, or what's the meaning of human will?" -- pg 186

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this novel, and its characters have touched my heart. There is an essence of humanness to Anne and Oliver, to their characters, that explains all of their actions completely. In a way, this is a Bildungsroman and an acknowledgement of a maturing young woman that she is finally able to step out of the shadows of her mother (for fear of becoming like her) to forge her own character.

Throughout the book, Anne is referred to as a unique sort, a rara avis and it was wonderful to see her recognize that quality within herself which others have long gleamed. It is more her story than anything else, told in a first-person narrative style hat captures her impetuosity, intelligence, growth, and emotional burdens. I came away with a sense of celebration for the human spirit.

At this time of my life, I fear that I am more concerned with rapidly devouring books with my limited time than writing reviews for them, so I won't go into more details of this work...but I do feel that this is a work, once read, will bear a re-reading every so often.
This is one of my "keeper" books--the few regency romances that I have read (and I have probably read close to 500 by now) and I have saved and reread on a regular basis. No matter how many times I have gone through the story, it still moves me to tears every time.

The book starts off with 13-year old Anne Saunders recounting her experience with "amour." Or rather, her mother's experiences with it. Her mother was a mistress to many a men and was ruled by passion--"amour" she called it.

When her mother dies, Anne goes to live with an older cousin named Oliver, a confirmed bachelor. Here Anne is shaped into the woman she will grow into.

The book is told in Anne's point of view, first person narrative. It is not only a very easy read (I can never put it down), but it is emotional and touching. I don't think I will ever get sick of rereading it. I've read a few of other Elizabeth Mansfield's other books and none have been as wonderful, most are not even close, to this one. Indeed, I think this is one of the best Regency books from any author.
I have only read two other regency romances by this author The Counterfeit Husband and A Grand Deception (both 3 stars). So when I started LOVE LESSONS I wasn't sure how much I was going to like it. It contained three areas that are hard for many romance readers to enjoy. The first person tense, the May/December age span and the guardian/ward literary device. But Ms. Mansfield seems to make it work.

Anne Saunders begins her tale at the age of twelve. Her father died when she was very young and her mother passed away at the onset of the story. She is living temporarily with her paternal grandmother when Oliver Fleming, the young Earl of Pentargon, is called to her home. A confirmed bachelor, botanist and horseman, he wants nothing to upset his comforting lifestyle. So when he is approached to accept the guardianship of Anne he first responds with a firm 'No'. Little is he aware that Anne is in the background listening to their conversation. Words are exchanged between the two adults and Oliver finally agrees to take custody of her.

Over the next four years Oliver and Anne, as they agree to call each other, settle into a new life. He teaches her about botany and riding horses if she leaves him alone when he is busy with other duties. She is content with his dusty house, the few live-in servants he has, and her own quiet-time. In turn, he allows her within reason, to speak to him with honesty if he answers her the same. They get along.

By the time she is sixteen her feelings have changed for this man. One day she confesses to him that she is in love and will wait for him to marry her in a couple more years. Shocked, he sends her away to learn the ways of becoming a lady so she will someday attract a man closer to her own age.

Be aware that this traditional romance is clean. There is kissing at the most but don't delude yourself into thinking there is not sexual tension. There is. The best thing about this story is that everyone acts as if the book is taking place in the early 1800's. The dialog and attitudes are, for the most part, what might have happened on a country estate with a cast of unusual characters. You won't find any twenty-first century influences here.

There is a look at puppy love with another young man, a minor villain and the pursuit of a rake among those that influence Anne. This story was believable; it was a pleasure to read a romance that seemed true to the times.
I am so glad that this was not my first pick to read from this author! If it had been, I would have missed some truly delightful stories. I almost can not believe this is an Elizabeth Mansfield book! To be fair, I HATE FIRST PERSON BOOKS. To be honest, this is one of the worst ones I have ever read. Not her forte and certainly some of the worst characters ever. A snotty, spoiled miss and a blockhead male. Pass this up if this will be your first Elizabeth Mansfield and pick another title. I tossed this on the giveaway pile before even finishing it.
Just awesome! Impeccable writing? Check. Humour? Check. Good plot with everything coming together at the end even though not always in the favour of the characters? Check.

I like how there is nothing that makes you think: "Hey! That couldn't happen to Y because then X would just swoop in and do this or that."
How To Train Your Dragon How to Betray a Dragon Hero Cressida Cowell 9780316244121 Books Reviews

...but Cressida Cowell can do it! I have read and purchased every single one of her Dragon series books, including the imports and special titles not easily available in the United States, and I have loved them all! They just keep getting better and better, and that's not an easy task for an author. In fact, the very first book in the dragon series (How to Train Your Dragon) was my LEAST favorite!

If you have read Cressida's other dragon books look for more of your favorite characters, some really funny scenes with Fishlegs, Stoick the Vast, and Big-Boobied Bertha. You'll see some favorite old villains and get to accompany Hiccup on a journey to find "America." You'll meet some new characters and a frightening sea dragon (there is such an AWESOME picture of him on the front cover!!). You see Hiccup really grow up a lot in this story, and his true bravery shines through stronger than ever.

If you have never read Cressida's books or only read a few there is some crude humor here, farting jokes, booby jokes, so if that kind of thing offends you or your child, you might want to think twice. The sea dragon is described in scary detail, including its immense size and shooting poison from its mouth, so if you plan to read this to a youngster who might get nightmares, it might not be the best choice. And as always, I recommend reading her books in order, so start with the first one and read your way up to this one. But remember, out of all of her books, I found the first to be my least favorite, and I'm not really sure why that is.

Last fact to know is that this is an import and it's paperback. I prefer buying her books in hardcover to add to my collection, but I couldn't wait for this one! Being an import, it contains some British slang and spelling that U.S. children might not understand at first, but nothing that would interfere with the story.

I am an elementary school teacher and have read Cressida's stories aloud to my 2nd graders. If your child is too young to read this on his own, it will make a wonderful read aloud, too.
It is sometimes a challenge to find books for my son to read that are of interest to boys! He has read all the books and would read more if there were more. The books hold his interest and even give fun trivia information about the world of training dragons!
I am not very happy that lately a few of my packages have been arriving later than I was told they would come but I am glad to have this book all the same.

I'm only ready the first few chapters and already that has me hooked for more. It makes me sad to know there is only one last book left before the series comes to an end but I am happy to have been through the ride and discovering such a fun and heartwarming book series. If it weren't for these books we wouldn't even have the fantastic film series DreamWorks has been making so thanks to Cressdia Cowell (and Hiccup) for giving us the grand adventures both on paper and on the silver screen.
Great price for a great series! Looked around and couldn't say no to this great deal. Just know this is a paperback box set of books 1-9 and there are 3 more books after. (The last coming out end of 2015) Bought for a 10 year old, but my husband and I have been reading it and enjoying the story. Easy fun adventure read. One of the must have series for us on the shelf next to Redwall & Narnia.
My 10 year old son and I LOVE this series! I can honestly say that in all my years of reading and reviewing hundreds of books, this series is in my all time favorites. Rarely do I come across adult books, that even begin to compare to character development and story lines that these books do! Cressida Cowell, I know that you are writting the last book in the series right now, but please come out with more book quickly! I live for the days when your books are released and I am so sad once I am done, knowing I will have to wait to experience such splendor again.
This series of books has been a hit with my 6 year old grandson (and me). We are working our way through the entire collection about the boyhood of the famous Viking Hiccup and his friends and dragons. Vivid characters, sometimes crude and a little violent, the stories are creative, suspenseful and exciting. Although they are stand alone stories with flashbacks and background, it is far more fun to start with Book 1 and work your way through the series. Even the drawings done by the author are terrific. Yes Vikings can be ugly and it beats the beautified and sanitized version of books one and two Disney did. Hats off toe Cowell.
While I loved the previous 3 books this was definitely the best of the series! I gotta say, I didn't much like Mamma in the previous book but in this one I absolutely loved her! She surprised me with her wit and her devotion to seeing things right for her daughter. Actually, she was very down to earth all things considered. And Alec, I had already fallen in love with him in the last book and that didn't change here. He and Edie were perfect for each other! I loved their bantering back and forth. It wasn't too hard to figure out the villain, that was really no surprise there, but it did add suspense to the story line. I also liked that this story took place mostly in Scotland where it was so beautiful (even if they did have to listen to the occasional bagpipe). Good series and now I'm on to the female renegades!

How to Marry a Royal Highlander Renegade Royal book 4 Vanessa Kelly 9781420131284 Books Reviews

Awesome conclusion to the series. I like that it takes place in Scotland, and that it is also a mystery of who's out to get you. Awesome characters and it keeps you guessing what's going to happen. Couldn't put it down. Highly recommended.
This is the 4th book in this series and I have read them all and loved them. I will definitely be reading more books by Vanessa Kelly. Her books keep your interest and you do not want to put them down. I would recommend this book to everyone.
I found this book to be fast paced and witty. I was very pleased that persons constantly had dialogue with each instead of ruminating in their minds. I definitely will be reading more from this author
Edie is found in a compromising position and sent to Scotland to let the scandal die down. She then becomes part of another scandal involving Alec, Master of Riddick. During this time she is almost killed three times. Throughout her adventures she finds out how strong both she and her mother are. What is not to like about this story? This story has love, adventure and suspense.
This is the final installment in Kelly's Renegade Royals series, and it is thoroughly enjoyable. The book is definitely my favorite of the series, as well - its hard to resist a Scotsman! Edie and Alec are well-suited to each other, and although it was slightly predictable, there was a twist at the end that I didn't see coming. I am sad that this is the end of the series, but it has been quite a nice one to read. Vanessa Kelly is one of the best romance writers around!
Edie, Evie's twin (book 3), gets in so much trouble that she is sent to Scotland to rusticate with her mother at Alisdair Gilbride's grandfather's castle. This is primarily a story of clan tradition, family honor, inheritance, and trying to make your own way in the world.

I liked some of the earlier books in the series better, but this is a reasonably good addition to the series. While it marks the end of the Renegade Royals, there will be more stories of illegitimate royals, this time female. I look forward to reading them.
Not very fun to read, with all that bickering. I found it a bit narrowing and i found the conflict/villain to be
overwrought. I liked the true clan Graham facts and I liked the way the mother showed her mettle. I just did not find any of it the least bit believable, and I never believed in the devotion of the couple. Lust, yes. Interest, yes. But nothing like true love.
I read this book last summer. I went on three mission trips with Teen Mania, one ATF, and Washington for Jesus in the spring of 1996. I learned a lot from those experiences. My brother was killed in a tragic midair plane collision in 2013. I decided to read this book because I wanted to know about Hannah's experience from the crash. I did learn something. I liked the book. Although it did read like a love struck teenager. However I'm glad I read it.
Great condition, and a great read!
Thoroughly enjoyed reading. Will recommend to others.
I was an intern at the Honor Academy. I grew up watching Ron Luce on my tv. Going to ATF and church camps. When I was called to teen mania it was a dream come true. I had the privilege of knowing Hannah personally. My fondest memory of her was traveling with her the Dallas ATF. Hannah was so full of spirit and I looked up to her so much. When I heard about the crash I searched for every detail there was. She was my friend. This book was written so well. You could feel her every emotion. I love how transparent she was. I could not put this book down. Thank you Hannah for sharing your story
This was a Great Story , It was very well writing . I also would recommend this book to any young Readers in their teen years . Some of the parts about her injuries are maybe a little hard for very young readers. I am in my 50 but though it was a great book on a young Ladies growth in the Lord coming from a well known Christian Family.
I chose this book because I have met this young lady and her family. I was very impressed with her personal strength and persistence in plowing through the spiritual questions she had. She was very courageous in her honesty of what it was like growing up in the environment of her father's ministry. She writes with love and candor without bitterness or anger. Ironic how her family instilled strength and independence in her which enabled her not only to recover, but also to choose her own beliefs and direction.
A very riveting book, in depth, and honest. I know one of the families that lost a son in the plane crash, it was devastating for the family as it was for all of the families who lost a son. A tragedy that all so young would be gone so soon. It is great that Hannah was able to share the experience and many prayers for her to go forward in her life.
As a missionary for 30 years who worked closely with Teen Mania in Botswana, Hannah's story is remarkable! My kids have grown up in much the same way-only in Africa, but it all comes down 'to each his own' relationship with God. This book is the blood and guts of raw faith and God's amazing grace. May the readers experience their own "fields of grace"!
I finally found the time to be able to finish this book, hard to do when my little one is sick.

Although it was hard to get into in the beginning, it didn't disappoint. I was rewarded with an adventure unlike no other, that I've read to date. The characters are hard to understand at first, at least to me, but as you read further on, things become much clearer.

I love Pallas and her innocence, Othello I'm still in limbo over. Read the book and find out why. I do hope to find some type of romance between Pallas and Oliver, as I really like him.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and didn't want to put it down. I can't wait to read the next book titled "Whom the Gods Destroy".

Thank you D.C. Belton for this adventure!
You know those books that you just don't wanna put down? Not because there's something exciting happening in the story or it is a good story...not only that but mostly because the writing flows and the story is being told so smoothly that you just read on and on. This book was such a book.

The parts I loved the most began when Pallas is aboard the ship and meets the crew. Their humor, lightheartedness and loyalty towards each other made them lovable.

I also liked that we're set up to hate Elena in the beginning of the story but we find out she has more depth and understands political intrigue much better than her younger sisters give her credit for.

Othello, I feared and hated just like I was supposed to. Even when I laughed at his antics, I wasn't less creeped out by him!

About the gods and their machinations a) I'm not yet sure if they're actually deities and not humans who know what opposable thumbs are, b) they just don't care whose life they ruin, do they? Even Pallas who claims not to believe in gods & goddesses can't escape their schemes!

Pallas keeps mentioning how her father must miss her and I couldn't shake the feeling that there's something wrong there. Poor Pallas!

What would have made the book even better was a little more world building, maybe? Or a map, so we could understand what this world is like even better.
I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next one in the series. The Gods Among Us speaks of the different gods and goddesses and follows the adventures of Pallas a young slave.

The start of the book was a little hard for me to follow simply because there was so many different people, gods and goddesses to take in. The Gods Among Us speaks of the different gods and goddess.

The start of the book was a little hard for me to follow simply because there was so many different gods and goddesses. However the book soon pulled me along on Pallas's adventure.

The story follows a 16 year old drone by the name of Pallas. Drones are the lowest station of humans and there job is to feed the gods. Pallas is causing or finding trouble everywhere she goes in this story, but she stands up for what she believes in. She is much smarter than the other drones in the story because her father taught her various things that no other drones really understands. She later learns to read and is schooled on how to act among the more noble class of people.

Pallas lost her mother to the sea when she was younger and she blames Aegeia (goddess of the sea) for it. On her 16th birthday she is strolling on the beach wishing to escape when she sees something floating in the sea. She decides to swim out to see what it is and her life is never the same. She makes it to the egg as she calls it and climbs in with the help of some dolphins. There she meets a cat named Othello who is able to talk.

Othello and Pallas have many adventures in this book and encounter many dangers including Pallas almost becoming a sacrifice and later is believed to be the one to fulfill a prophecy "The Age of Aquarius". The book leaves you waiting for the next installment of The Divine Masquerade series called Whom the Gods Destroy.

Overall I enjoyed the plot and the characters. I wish we had been able to meet the father of Pallas. Also maybe in the second book we will find out more about Pallas's mother? I hope to see a little romance blossom in the next one also. I like the cover on this book. I liked how the book ended. It left you ready for the next book but it did not leave this book unfinished either.

Source I received a copy of this book from the author to provide an honest and fair review.

First off, allow me to divulge a bit of information for newcomers of the Bishop Brothers series. Remember Courtney Bishop from the Checkmate series, specifically This is Reckless/Effortless? If so, then you know she has four brothers and if not, you do now. The Bishop Brothers series, a interconnected standalone series that takes place in Texas is about them. Book one, Taming Him is Alex's book, the youngest Bishop brother and I really, really liked it. But book two, this book is about Evan, the oldest and let's just say loved would be putting it mildly and a massive freaking understatement! Reality is I wasn't prepared at all for him nor his story.

Evan Bishop is not only sarcastic, broody, and closed off, but infuriating at times... and mine. Emily Bell is sassy and ballsy, yet vulnerable and very, very determined. Together, these two deliver a quickwitted and comical banter to lighten the mood from the emotional baggage of their past. The same baggage that had them both throwing caution to the wind and indulging in one night, except that one night followed them both to work.

Though Needing Him takes us off the ranch at times and gives us an inside look at the hustle and bustle everyday life of emergency room doctors, the same southern warmth, hometown charm, and memorable family dynamic that Kennedy Fox used to set the tone of this series is still very much present.

Needing Him captivated me with it's premise, hooked me with it's cover, but it was the passion dripping off the pages, the mystery that had me questioning so many things all at once, that witty repartee that only an enemies-to-lovers romance can emanate, and those unexpected moments and surprises that utterly and wholeheartedly consumed me!

Note: And that ending?!
Needing Him Bishop Brothers edition by Kennedy Fox Romance eBooks Reviews

I love the Bishop clan. Evan Bishop broke the convention and became a doctor, much to his father’s chagrin, though on his off days he works at the ranch. He is very dedicated to his job but also closed off emotionally. At his brother Alex’s wedding, he hooks-up with a woman but finds himself alone the next morning. Emily Bell needs a fresh start after her boyfriend cheats on her and they worked at the same hospital. When she walks in on the first day and finds her one-stand will be her supervisor, well, being shocked is an understatement. These two strong-willed, driven individuals are a perfect match, but can they overcome past hurts and open themselves up to love. It was a fun ride to find out what would happen between these two. At the same time, the entire Bishop family is involved adding so much depth to this series. I loved that we learned more about Keira and can see Jackson being jealous. So excited for the next brother’s story.
The second book in the Bishop Brothers series, Needing Him, is Evan’s story. He’s the oldest of the four and the most serious. He didn’t follow the ranching handbook and make that his life, he also added being a doctor to the mix. One that he’s really great at. As things have it, one thing leads to another and a one night stand ends up being more trouble that it’s work (sometimes that happens – hehe).

Enter Dr. Emily Bell … she has a very well known background with famous family members. But what neither of them knew was that she was the new doctor at the hospital and to be working with Evan in the ER. Well, things are a bit tense and Evan’s not very nice. It might have do to with the fact that she stole his clothes the morning after (I’ll leave that for your reading pleasure and all ends up ok on that front). Evan also knows of her past and won’t let her use that to make her way up the hospital chain or to have others think she was just given it. Everyone earns their keep, it’s the Bishop way.

While things are extremely rocky between the two, the chemisty is nuts. But Emily is against it due to things that have gone down in her past with less than steller results in the love department. As time moves on, things smooth out and we have a relationship between the two. While still rocky at times and some heated discussions, they do make it out the other side together. There is one part towards the end with some forshadowing but if you don’t look for it, you won’t see it.

We end up with HEA for them (as well as a little bundle), get caught up with the rest of the crew from the first book and find out how they are all doing as well as all the funny stuff that Jackson gets up too. Such a great addition to the series!!!

Myn
“You’re going to be the end of my resolve.”

Where do I even begin with this book? It’s no surprise Kennedy Fox writes a book so intriguing as much as it is inticing, it wasn’t meant to be read other than cover to cover. Needing Him went BEYOND all my expectations. You always go into a KF Book thinking you’ll know exactly what you’re getting and then it ends up being something beyond your wildest imagination!

This book legit had EVERYTHING! From the perfect head butting comradeship mixed with an undeniable attraction between two doctors, to unyielding love and compassion between two people destined to be together no matter the odds. There were so many elements that made Evan and Emily’s story what it was. It’s the little things that matter most in this book. With all of this and a little suspense thrown in and it’s KF’s best book to date!

It doesn’t matter the type of romance you’re used to. Needing Him is a book every avid reader and lover of romance can devour and worship. Not to mention, KF always can throw in a good epilogue that just leaves you begging for more on said couple as much as the following book!

Definitely an easy fav of 2018 and my fav book to date my none other than my fav unicorns!
Looking for a light hearted read that will have you smiling from ear to ear the whole way through? (Well... almost.) Look no further. Tracey Garvis-Graves' Heart-Shaped Hack is fraught with humor and sarcasm, witty banter and colorful characters that had me fully engaged in this story before I could even blink. This author has delivered taboo, she's given us serious, emotionally-taxing storylines and now she returns with a heartwarming contemporary romance that I could not put down. Heart-Shaped Hack is unexpected, it's refreshing, and it's so damn sexy. From beginning to end, I absolutely loved it.

Kate Watts is the perfect heroine. She's smart and strong and feisty and so genuine. She's funny and beautiful and relatable, I connected with her right out of the gate. My initial feelings about Ian: "I don't even know you and I already love you!" He's intrusive and inappropriate and so freaking funny. I loved him immediately. I had no idea what his agenda was, which of course made him that much more alluring. The mystery of what he wanted, where his interest in Kate stemmed from, what his job entailed, why he was so elusive, where this relationship could possibly go.... all these questions made me ravenous for the story to unfold.

Together, Kate and Ian are pure magic. Even with so much secrecy and uncertainty, there was never a question that these two were perfect together. Tracey Garvis-Graves cultivates the dynamic between these characters, their chemistry and the authenticity of the emotion between them so exquisitely. Every touch, every word, every glance, every heated moment is a palpable stoke of the intense fire between them and it burns so fiercely I could not look away. Maybe I'm too forgiving, too accepting, too romantic. I tend to overlook the traits in fictitious leading men that, in real life, would send up huge red flags. Ian's propensity for intruding in Kate's private affairs, always knowing where she is, what she's doing, the way he completely invaded her space, would be totally creepy if it were anyone else. The guy is obviously hiding something big, refusing to share his last name, where he lives, the details of who he is and what he does, all the while knowing every intimate detail about Kate. And he doesn't even deny it! He's completely transparent in his deceit. It's weird and bizarre and pretty damn creepy, and yet, I didn't care! I loved everything about him, and I was so completely invested in this relationship despite how unbalanced the scales were. But with that said, I knew that things would have to come to a head eventually, nothing stays in the dark forever. And it was the not knowing, the completely unpredictable turn of events that transpired, the utterly heartbreaking curve ball I never saw coming that really threw me for a loop.

Everything about this storyline and these characters consumed me. The concept was completely unique and refreshing and every word was superbly written. Tracey Garvis-Graves molded this plot beautifully, building this story up, developing these characters so entirely. I was addicted. I was so anxious to see where this could go, what Ian's real story was, how far Kate would let this go before demanding some truth in return. But conversely, I never wanted it to end. I wanted time to slow down so I could just savor this story, the build, the delicious romance between these completely magnetic characters. This story is the whole package. The author left no stone unturned in the execution of Heart Shaped Hack. From the development of these characters, to the plotting and pacing of this storyline, from every bit of dialogue, to every ounce of emotion she could eek out of this plot, it's so perfectly delivered. I felt everything within these pages, from pure unadulterated joy to desolation and despair. The laugh out loud funny moments were such a stark contrast to the painful, desperate ones and yet it all fit together to make this seamless, beautiful, unforgettable package that I can't wait to read again and again.

HeartShaped Hack Kate and Ian #1 eBook Tracey Garvis Graves Reviews

Here I am, just going along on my merry way thinking I'll just have a light romantic read. No, you say, and you sneak in some of the most visceral scenes of loss I have ever read. I required an entire box of tissues, Tracey. An ENTIRE box.

Not cool.

I loved this book. Honestly. I'm mad I cried so hard I had to put the freaking book down, but I loved it.

But I say this under protest, because you made me cry when I wanted to laugh.
Kate runs a food pantry. Ian makes donations to it because he is attracted to her. They begin dating. The whole book is their dating relationship and doing things together. That is ok for the beginning of the book, but at the 37% mark I’m thinking “when is something going to happen?” I’m still thinking that until the 70% mark. Finally something happens at that point. For much of the book, I was fast-reading/skimming out of boredom hoping and looking for something to happen.

The thing that happened at 70% could have been expanded into more of a story. But the author ignored showing bad guys. There could nave been some tension or conflict if the author was in the head of a bad guy, or showed a bad guy planning and doing things. But the author skipped that.

One guy appeared to be an innocent person and talked to Kate a couple times. But nothing else was done with that other than Kate being suspicious. Knowing more about that guy could have been interesting.

I bought this book because I enjoyed “On The Island” by this author.

DATA
Narrative mode 3rd person. Story length 340 pages. Swearing language strong but rarely used. Sexual language mild. Number of sex scenes about 7. Setting current day mostly Minneapolis, Minnesota. Copyright 2015. Genre contemporary romance.
"Always choose love. Always choose the adventure. You'll never regret it."

Heart-Shaped Hack was an absolute pleasure to read. I loved the main characters, Kate and Ian, and I adored their banter! Kate is a great heroine because she's very giving, smart, and funny. I loved Ian's sense of humor, the fact that he has a really good heart, and I liked his cockiness. I thought his career as a hacker was very interesting and unique. I've read a lot of romance books...and Ian just might be my favorite hero of them all.
There were many laugh out loud moments throughout the story and some really heartfelt ones too. I can't wait for more of Kate and Ian's story!!

Thoughtless SC Stephens 9781461091110 Books

Why do we read romance novels? For the fantasy of being desired and adored by a man who is everything we want in a lover. In turn, the heroine must be deserving of his love and adoration and always do right by her man. But what if she doesn't? What if she is Kiera? Now, I like to read about flawed heroines, but Kiera pushed all my judgmental buttons. First of all, she was so ridiculously clingy. She was sobbing--sobbing!--when she had to be separated from her boyfriend for two months. She was supposed to be twenty-one, but she often acted like a fourteen year old who reacts like it's the end of the world when something doesn't go her way.

Next we have the cheating. I was actually okay with that at first, but then she kept wavering between the two guys so much that her indecisiveness got on my nerves. I would have had more respect for her if she had just admitted to herself that she wanted both guys. I could have handled her selfishness much better if she hadn't been so clingy and annoying. She was constantly crying over having two hot men in love with her. I know that's insensitive of me, but Kiera's behavior had me rolling my eyes a lot.

On the plus side, her sex scenes with Kellan were smoking hot. I finally understand why readers will overlook ridiculous heroines or plots if they are into the love interest. Christian Grey didn't do it for me, but he did it for millions of other women. I get it now.

I didn't, however, rate it five stars only because of Kellan. As I got further into the book, I realized how different it was. This is not something that I've read before. In every other book with cheating, it is justified with the heroine's boyfriend being abusive or a cheater himself. Not here. Denny is a genuinely loving and faithful boyfriend. Kiera has no valid excuse for cheating on him. She just succumbs to her lust for Kellan. Then she tries to fight it, but she reaches new heights of ridiculousness in this section of the book by constantly cuddling with him while she is supposedly wanting to be just friends. Of course, she succumbs to lust again. She really becomes maddening when she realizes that she is in love with him but can't bring herself to let go of Denny. Talk about frustration for the reader! No wonder so many of them hate Kiera.

Here's the thing though. There are lots of people like Kiera in the world, both female and male versions of her. This happens every day in the real world, so this is one of the most realistic romance novels I have ever read. People have affairs, sometimes for years, without ending their current romantic relationships. It's not easy to leave someone you've been with for years, and it's even harder to admit that you've betrayed them. That doesn't excuse it or justify it either, and the author wasn't trying to do that. She chose to unflinchingly tell this story and show all the selfishness, bad decisions, cowardice, and hurt. I give props to this author for not writing the same old romantic fantasy.
Like so many others who have given this a one or two star rating, I have to agree, this story was atrocious! I struggled with it and kept coming back to the five star ratings here to push me to finish it. The plot of the story was fine. It was the painfully over-long story-telling and the emotional repetitiveness. There was really no Denny and Kiera in this story other than the setup. *Spoilers* Denny and Kiera move to Seattle because he lands a dream internship at a prestigious firm and she is lucky enough to receive a scholarship at the local college there, as well. They move into a house with his friend Kellan Kyle, who is the vulnerable lead singer in a rock band, who has never been loved - aww. (Well, I loved him!) They get settled in and right away, Denny is given an assignment in Tucson for what was supposed to be only two months. He starts calling Kiera less and less and she becomes more and more lonely, turning to Kellan for companionship which then leads to more, but doesn't become physical until Denny calls to tell her they want him to stay on in Tucson for two more years and he has agreed to stay. She can't leave to join him because she's got a job and the scholarship. So she breaks up with him. At this point Denny becomes just a premise of a boyfriend, a prop to give Kiera someone to cheat on. I related completely to her initial heartbreak over Denny's choice, then getting drunk in her sorrow and "using" Kellan, whom she was growing close to in Denny's absence. This didn't bother me - it could happen - her heart broken, she's in the house with someone she is already growing close to, who is immensely attractive and who is obviously feeling the same way about her. She's under the influence and I can see them going for it under the circumstances. But then Denny gives up his once-in-a-lifetime internship, and rushes back to Seattle the very next day because he loves Kiera so much (she is his heart) and couldn't bear the thought of losing her. But she has already become addicted to Kellan, and vacillates back and forth wanting Denny, then Kellan, Denny, Kellan and on and on and on, chapter after chapter. She was one of the most fickle characters I've ever read and I didn't like her at all. And, OMG, she cries all the time! For the most part, all Denny's character does is work at a job he hates and sleeps, which is extremely convenient for Kiera and Kellan as she is able to sneak down Every. Single. Morning. to feed her fix, her "close" time with Kellan, where they hold hands, hug, kiss, etc. while Denny...sleeps. She shows very little emotion towards Denny unless she is feeling guilty, but she can't let him go because she doesn't want to hurt him...because she still loves him. Yet, she is hurting him every time she cheats on him with Kellan, he just doesn't know it yet. The scene where she leaves her bed with Denny after he falls asleep and sneaks into Kellan's room, directly across the hall, for a muffled, all-nighter and stays with him until nearly dawn then crawls back in bed before Denny wakes up and cuddles him. Ewwww!

There are some really good moments in this story, most of them around Kellan's character and his emotional, heart-wrenching vulnerability. The scene where Denny finally "catches" them, how he responds and the subsequent emotional backlash was a "I can't put this book down" moment.

Lastly, what made this book Titanic for me was the author's extreme over-use of the words "cheek(s)" and "tear(s)." I mean seriously, I was cringing every time I saw them used throughout this story. In fact, I used my app to search for each of the words to count how many times the author used them. Cheek(s) 231 times; Tear(s) 225 It was annoying and distracting to the story with the repetitive use of these words in "every" emotional scene and believe me the story is comprised of one emotional scene after another. Enough already!
I bought this in search of a cure for my Beautiful/Walking Disaster hangover. It’s good, but nothing like I was trying to replace. First off, I hated Keira. Hated. God she’s awful. Whiney, needy, constantly contradicting herself between “I’m so innocent” and “I’m a cheating whore.” Second, The amount of time her character “blushes” drove me insane. At least 100 times. At least. You’d think the author could think of other adjectives besides “I blushed” 50 thousand times. Keira blushes at the mention of sex but she had sex w both guys at the drop of a hat? And the development of the “friendship” between Kellan and Keira was just weird. Not normal. Super fast and awkward. People don’t act like that. I needed a bit more character development with that friendship before it got all R rated.
Oh but Kellan...I did like him. I found his reactions & emotions- anger, frustration, acting out as revenge, to be quite normal considering the situation. That damn girl strung him along, it was awful.
Towards the end of the book, I did like Keira a tiny bit more. Maybe cuz she suffered. Whatever.
Bottom lime, the book was good, you’ll probably enjoy the tug and pull of your heartstrings. Not sure if I’d read the second book though.
But first one was worth the read.

He Just Not That Into You The NoExcuses Truth to Understanding Guys The Newly Expanded Edition Greg Behrendt Liz Tuccillo Lauren Monchik 9781416947400 Books Reviews

This book was mostly just hilarious to listen to on my long commute home from work - it's definitely written with a humorous tone, which beats sitting in my car and inner-monologuing about road rage. Ultimately, the argument is oftentimes overly-simplistic, not founded on any real science and repetitive, but I do agree with the general premise. If he's not making an effort to see you regularly or be with you, he's just not that into you - period. Not a hard concept and many of us as women want something to work out so badly that we will drum up excuses instead of listening to our gut. I do think that there are occasions when this simple axiom isn't the answer/solution to the problem - but I also think a gut check will help sort that out. Still, a good read for young women who are just starting to enter the dating world and could use a crash course in how to not settle for d-bags - wish I had read this in my twenties.
I've spent my whole life making excuses for men and sacrificing my well being, my boundaries, and my self worth for men who were not into me. I've never been in a proper relationship, so my standards were low to nonexistent. I honestly had no idea what I was doing wrong to "sabotage" the relationship and felt there was something I was doing wrong and committing the same fatal mistake over and over. In reality, they were just into me in the first place or even if they were initially, I acted like it was ok to treat me like dirt, which kills any kind of attraction as confidence is sexy. Now, after reading your book I know what to look for and will be able to catch myself when I start making excuses for them. I'm so glad that a man wrote this book and it's coming from a male perspective, so I know it's trust worthy. At 29 years I actually feel more confident to start dating know I have a reference point in how to navigate it all.
As someone in my 60's with a good amount of life experience, I think this is a book with a very important message for girls/women from ages 12-85.

I read the book in a couple hours. For someone younger it might take 4-5 hours. I haven't rated the book five stars because it's a literary masterpiece, but because of its most important and clear message, with lots and lots of good examples.

The important message in this book is about how guys think and what they really mean when they say particular things.

I would have benefited from reading this book when I was younger, and if EVERY young woman read this book it would save many of them needless hours of heartache.
Every straight woman should be required to read this book when she turns 18 (if not earlier). The advice to make men do the asking is a bit antiquated, I think, and the advice is really only relevant to male-female couples, but the message behind the rest of the book is solid. If I would have read this years ago, I would have wasted so much less time in dead-end relationships, or pining after some dude that I kept making excuses for. It's harsh, and you may or may not go through some of the 5 stages of grief while reading it, but you'll be a better person for realizing he's just not that into you. One of the best purchases I have ever made.
Move over diamonds, Greg Behrendt is a girl's new best friend. This book is hilarious and its humor will turn off any yearning for the man you thought was "into you" but not heard from in a while. (The book also gives women permission--and courage--to dump a man without feeling guilty.) The sad truth took a while to sink in that if a man really wants a particular woman, he'll move mountains to be with her. After reading this book I became very curious as to why men are sometimes so fickle--show interest in a woman then back off. This led me to delve into Dr Pat Allen's books and read John Gray's books ie Men are from Mars.... I have also found more in-depth answers--the psychological reasons why--in Robert Moore's King, Warrior, Magician, Lover.
I first read this when I was "head over heals" for a guy who was to "busy" for me. I was waiting for him to have time. The guy even read the book and did not like Greg at all. It took a couple of years to emotionally realize that this guy was just not that into me.

I spent a couple more years pursuing my interests and just being friends with guys...staying open. To my surprise I met an amazing new guy who has a busy job but always makes time for me. I met him doing what I love most ... dancing! We share the same interest. There are no games. He is thrilled to be with me. He is very good looking, very humorous, younger than me and we share the same values. He even lives near my extended family. He wants to spend his life with me and I want that too. I just reread Greg's advice. I think he is right on. Don't waste the pretty on guys that don't deserve you. I don't know if there is a guy out there for every woman ... But I would rather be alone than with a guy who is not that into me!

I
You've probably told yourself all of this stuff before, but seeing it in writing really brings it home. I feel like this book has changed my entire perspective on dating and when I feel like there's any inkling of a guy "not being that into me", I quickly end the communication. No point wasting our time!
I've had some push back from male friends who I explained this to and they said I can't base life off of a book written by people who can't know how EVERY single guy thinks, but the reality is that if the guy doesn't think the way I do about this--I don't want him!
On the same token, I've had some male friends who agreed that what's stated is true if a man wants a woman, he goes and gets her!
If he is really that into you, you will know.
There will be no doubting or questioning.
This book just reaffirmed my inner voice that was telling me this kind of stuff but I always brushed aside in hopeless romantic style.
Not anymore!
If you're not that into me--bye!
if I read this 10 years ago, I never would have gotten married. So there's that.

Save yourself from terrible mistakes.
This book is confusing. She doesn't want to be the typical trailer trash but makes questionable decisions. She's the strong I don't need a man type but can't say no to the other man who she claims to not want. She kisses one person and sleeps with his brother in the same night. Plus I didn't like her. Single hardworking mom or not she treated the hero horribly. She does nothing to make things right. It's all on him.
This was disappointing. The main characters were so unmotivated to change so the story advanced very slowly.

I also didn’t like how the main lead insulted her mom over and over in a myriad of small cutting snipes. It was actually shocking once you count the jibes. The irony is that she wanted to be cut some slack for not having everything for her kid, but did not give her mom any of the same courtesy. It was weird and (another) unattractive character trait.
In high school, Ruby Dawson worked hard so she could graduate and get out of her small town life. She grew up in a trailer park and her mother is a manager at the local strip club so Ruby didn't want the rumors and stereotypes to follow her to college. As for Levi Cole, she didn't want to have anything to do with him either. He was always around her, bothering her or embarrassing her in some fashion. Granted, he wasn't the worst of them because he seemed to enjoy teasing her but also never went too far with it. He grew up with wealth and privilege, was one of the popular boys in school, and did just as well academically as Ruby. So he is totally wrong for her in her mind that she doesn't entertain any of his advances. At a graduation party, Ruby decides to cross a few things off her bucket list, which then changes the trajectory of her life afterwards where she winds up not leaving town after all.

And seven years later, Levi Cole returns. He sees Ruby still working at the same diner and living in the same double wide mobile home with her mom and that she never went to college. This time Levi won't leave Ruby alone because he has a lot of questions that he wants answers to. This is unnerving to Ruby because she'd rather stay invisible, but Levi sees her so clearly that she hates how she can't hide from him. I loved Levi. He could be a bit demanding, but when it comes to dealing with Ruby, sometimes that is the only way to get through to her. As for Ruby, I loved her independence and strong will, but she had walls up so high and thick that it was hard for her to let her guard down and accept that other people cared about her and see past her reputation. And while Ruby cannot deny her attraction to Levi, she also knows that her secret is the one thing that could ruin everything between them. There are some charged scenes that really got the emotions flowing although this wasn't an emotionally heavy book and I enjoyed watching Ruby transform as a character slowly over time because Levi brought it out of her. Overall, this was on the lighter side with a healthy dose of angst and a feel good ending.
This is not the type of book I prefer. I usually like them gritty raw dirty and dark. There is a part of me that loves a book that appeals to my hopeless romantic side. Finding one of these books that I appreciate is difficult. There are a few authors that I have loved who do a great job with these -tear your heart out-type books. I usually find them boring or dislike the characters-often the female character. This book had all the feels for me. I seldom buy a book before it has several reviews. I bought this one based on the story and the cover. There is no steamy hot sex in this book which I like but I guess you could say it didn’t need it. That is saying a lot coming from me. Little Ruby Dawson had my heart-that seldom happens with the female characters is these types of book. Levi Cole has to be every woman’s dream. For 24 hrs I lived in this book I was sorry to see it end. I would send this author flowers if I had her address.
WOW. Wow. Wow. Wow. WOW.
I needed this book.

I needed a book to help me reconnect with my love of reading and this book did just that. I am going to be completely honest, I saw this book on Facebook, another blog I followed shared it. The cover SPOKE to me. The title was okay but the gorgeous cover hooked me. (Yea, sometimes I do judge books by their covers. I really do try to avoid it but sometimes some covers just speak to me!) I then read the blurb of the book and DONE. I bought this book immediately.

I LOVE books where a strong and independent woman is given a rough life and has to overcome all the obstacles in her way to succeed. I love seeing her push through these challenges, learn and grow. I also really enjoy getting the main character’s thoughts and perspective during these various challenges. Rachel Higginson does just that. She has created a captivating story where the main character, Ruby, has to get past all of the hurdles that life has thrown at her.

Ruby had a plan for how her life would be. She was going to do anything and everything to be better than what life was giving her. Growing up with a cold-hearted, distant mother in a trailer park set the tone for her life. She was labeled as “trailer trash” by her peers. She wanted more. She had the determination to prove everyone wrong and become someone she always wanted to be until…she made a mistake that jeopardizes everything.

And then there is Levi. The boy who grated at her nerves, would tease her constantly and would have a sexy grin on his face the whole time. He was unnerving and frustrating yet smoking hot.

Ruby thought she would get away from Levi, from the town she grew up in, from the trailer park life…well, she was wrong.

Besides the captivating storyline, the well-developed and complex main characters make this book great. They are relatable and easy to connect with. I also really enjoyed that the story is told through Ruby. I could feel her frustrations, nervousness, heartache and more.

Misery Stephen King 9780450417399 Books

This was my first Stephen King novel. I must admit that it will not be my last. After seeing the film, I picked up the book and was startled to see how the story is even more detailed and gruesome and frightening than the film. The humor in the film was necessary for audience sales. The book is more true to life and detailed in human feeling and experience. King has an uncanny way of getting you into the heads of the characters and their emotions. I was terrified by Annie Wilkes and petrified for Paul Sheldon. It is not a light-hearted book and will have you trapped throughout. The imagery is visceral and the writing crisp. Be ready to be terrified and entertained.

Misery Stephen King 9780450417399 Books Reviews

Going into this, I knew the baseline to the story due to having seen the movie as a kid, but I didn’t remember it very well and had never read the book, although it’d been on my TBR for ages. I absolutely love Kathy Bates, and plan to rewatch it again soon since I finished the book!

After deciding to read a new King book every month starting with the month after my last birthday, I pushed this up on my list and set out to read it with the #kingbuddyreads group on Instagram. And what a wild ride!

Annie Wilkes is absolutely bananas. She’s a delusional, paranoid, violent psychotic and is completely unpredictable. Having the ‘evil’ in the book be an actual person rather than a paranormal entity always scares me a bit more. People have the ability to do some really messed up things, even without the help of the supernatural, and MISERY is a prime example of that. Annie’s character brought on conflicting senses of empathy and disgust while I was reading, as I felt both hatred/fear of her, and very sad for her. What a miserable life she leads!

This book caused me to cringe and even gasp out loud at different points. The pain that Paul Sheldon endures is incredible, and his determination and perseverance throughout the abuse he experiences is shocking. From emotional torment to physical, I felt so bad for him.

Another note on the book some people mentioned disliking the book-within-a-book format, but I enjoyed the in-book Misery as much as the rest of the story. The fact that this book is about a writer and his biggest fan’s obsession with him, and his most popular work, wouldn’t really be complete – to me – if I didn’t get to experience a taste of that work — even if it’s unlike the rest of the series, admittedly, and written under extreme duress. 😛

Definitely 5 stars from me! I’d absolutely recommend this to anyone – or maybe anyone not especially squeamish, yikes!
Paul Sheldon, a talented author famous mostly for his Misery books (think bodice-ripper romance), has put the finishing touches on his Great American novel, Fast Cars, and, heavily intoxicated, drives down the Colorado Rockies in the midst of a snowstorm. As you would imagine, he wrecks his car and is rescued by his Number 1 Fan, Annie Wilkes. But something isn't quite right with Annie Wilkes...

These past few years, I've been struggling to find books I love, turning to recommendations, old favorites, long-time authors, all in the event of relearning why I love to read. I bought this book based on a recommendation; I saw the movie before reading, and based on that experience (Kathy Bates and James Caan are fantastic!), I decided to read this as a scary Halloween read - and my treadmill read.

And I really, truly enjoyed myself. The cast of characters is short - basically only Paul and Annie - but it's really clear why Stephen King is such a well-loved author. He really writes with craft, creating these characters so deftly. Annie and Paul are complex people, really fascinating to read about and people who, while you don't like them or want to be their friends, you definitely want to see what happens to them next.

I wish I could go on and on about this, as I do with my negative reviews, but as anyone who reviews books know, it's hard to say everything that's great about a book. A book, when well written and intriguing, makes you forget where you are and what time it is. Reading a bad book, you feel every agonizing page and are constantly looking back to see how far away the end is.

I know not all of King's works are great, but this one was a nice addition to my season of "Falling in Love with Reading", and because of that, I would definitely not mind reading more of his works in the future.
Exciting beginning to a new series and a new author to me!

DCI Lorimer has taken on a case involving three young women who are discovered strangled and scalped and left in a Glasgow Park. He turns to Dr. Solomon Brightman, a psychologist and criminal profiler, much against his wishes. He thinks that Dr. Solomon is almost too eager to become involved in these murders.

These are gruesome murders, with the antagonist keeping the scalps as trophies, reminiscent of the 1800 battles of the Native Americans.

It takes a homeless man to find the connections among the victims, and Dr. Brightman finds himself lucky to have survived an assault with his hair intact. When a news reporter and his photographer start turning up and releasing confidential information, DCI Lorimer goes ballistic and more people die.

The action was a bit slow, but steady, in the very beginning, but picked up rapidly the more I read. I particularly enjoy new series and learning about all the major characters. I think the back stories make for great reading .. and this one met all my expectations.

I look forward to reading the rest of the series!

Never Somewhere Else Alex Gray 9781841953939 Books Reviews

On the front of the paperback edition to this book it boldly states that "Brings Glasgow to life in the same way Ian Rankin evokes Edinburgh" This is a disgraceful statement to be pointed at the good name of Rankin and the god amongst crime detectives John Rebus. Reading "Never Someone Else" can only be compared to viewing a rather poor episode of Murder She Wrote starring the ever youthful Angela Lansbury. The crime market is awash with wannabe Rankinists and yet seemingly the author of this story is a well respected and revered past winner of Scottish Association of Writers' Constable and Pitlochry trophies for her crime writing....whatever that is....

DCI Lorimer has been tasked with the unenviable job of unmasking a vicious killer who has mutilated and scalped three women leaving their bodies to be discovered in St Mungo's park. To help him understand the mind of the perpetrator he requests the services of psychologist Sol Brightman. Lorimer is probably the most characterless detective I have ever encountered there is nothing enthusiastic or appealing about him...and surely a DCI should be bold and charismatic in order to instil enthusiasm in the officers under his command. Even his English teacher wife Maggie finds him unpredictable and boring, they rarely communicate and she never knows what time to expect his presence at home...if at all. We learn little about the inner Lorimer, his interests does he like music? does he have a weakness for alcohol? does he prefer the company of other women? He is uninteresting and dull and it is surely only a short time before his long suffering Maggie departs in tears closely accompanied by a disillusioned reader! For crying out loud, dear author, this is the first in a supposedly exciting crime series and yet nothing is done to expose the mind of the lead player...leaving him as a dull soulless pathetic individual......you get the picture I didn't like him!

Any reader of crime will know that the villain will always make an appearance in the story before he is unmasked and it is always fun to try to second-guess this individual. It was a relatively simple process to successfully select the killer in such a poorly written novel. Undoubtedly the later books in the series will gradually expose the inner thoughts of" Mr very very dull and boring DCI" but I will certainly not be reading and will be planning my escape with the lovely perplexed Maggie...........
Greatly enjoyed this book. A few predictable plot turns, but I'm looking forward to continuing with the series. I have a feeling it will improve with each subsequent novel.
I just stared this series. Love Lorimer and Maggie. Ordered all books on my in order that they were written. Love following the path of the series. Always looking forward to the next book.
Really wanted to like this Scottish mystery but just could not manage it. The plot is okay if nothing new and the characters... well they just never seemed more than two-dimensional, missing that spark that lifts them off the page.
I was really excited as I read further and further into this first book by Alex Gray. I've always enjoyed the Ian Rankin series with Rebus, including the BBC show about this character. In NEVER SOMEWHERE ELSE, that same intertwining relationship between detective and psychologist/profiler comes into play wonderfully.

Detective Inspector Lorimer is an attractive, happily married man who spends way too much time investigating his cases, according to his wife. But that probably won't change anytime soon because of shortfalls in the Glasgow, Scotland's budget. Dr. Solomon Brightman is a well liked college professor of psychology. Though younger than Lorimer, he soon becomes a trusted associate as his theories seem to play out correctly in his help with police investigations. Unmarried, Brightman and intriguing pathologist, Rosie Fergusson, seem to have an interesting affinity for each other. This team looks to be a very interesting combination for many more mysteries!

In this book, women are being strangled with a bicycle chain, scalped, mangled, and then placed in St Mongo Park. Is this a serial killer, or someone wanting one girl killed without a motive being detected? The art world, journalists, photographers, and pedophiles all come into play as the police try to find this sadistic murderer before he murders again. I really enjoyed the journey with everyone involved, as the evidence and clues became evident within this book! Thrilled to have found this new series by Alex Gray!
This book took awhile to get into but once I did, it was enjoyable.
Scotish mystery writing belongs to a top of the craft.People like Ian Rankin, Val McDermid, Stuart MacBride come to mind. Their gritty , poetic language doesn't spare anybody.
Alex Gray's debut novel tries to accomplish the same. The result is a mixed bag.It is perfectly competent police procedural with an interesting plot, but it lacks originality. It seems like something we saw many times before. Of course, this is a first novel, and some of this foibles could be expected. I have the rest of her books, so we'll see where it goes from here.
I think the back stories make for great reading .. and this one met all my expectations.

I look forward to reading the rest of the series!
Well, this was unfortunate. The Edge of Never has been sitting on my kindle since ,well, forever. And I finally dove in. And, yall. Ugh. It definitely landed on my *did I read a different book than everyone else* shelf.

The Gist: Camryn can't deal with her life so she's running away. Yup. Packed a bag and booked it to the bus station picking a random spot across country based on what the ticket agent was eating. And she meets a guy.

So I'll start with the things I DID like:
1) A road trip! I love the adventure and seeing where the road takes you. I wanted to love this book just for that. I do wish they'd done more than just drive hotel to hotel and done some more sightseeing, though.
2) Andrew was a good guy. He's sexy, goes with the flow with a little aggressive edge. He's an easy guy to like.
3) The sex scenes were seriously steamy. There were no problems in that department at all.
4) The cover is amazing.

Which leaves pretty much everything else on the meh side of things.

Over the top dramatic, multiple inconsistencies, a heroine who acted closer to 15 than 20, drama on top of drama that popped up out of nowhere, constant idiotic behavior.

Camryn was difficult to like or root for. She complained about everything down to breakfast at a fast food joint when traveling, thinking any man who even glanced her way planned to rape, kill and dump her body. She was irresponsible and had no common sense. She's so fearful of being hurt yet lies and tells her mother she's in Virginia when she's really in Wyoming. Decides to road trip with someone who she's known for 2 days, has unprotected sex and insists he comes inside her, gets sloppy fall down pass out drunk. She was just ridiculous and blew so many things out of proportion.

There were also weird turns of phrase and continuation blips that made for awkward reading.

And, seriously, the idea that they're doing something new or outside the box is fairly laughable. They want to travel the world and backpack and go with the wind. Yeah, that's not an original thought at all. Pretty sure most college age kids have that notion.

Honestly I don't know why I kept reading. I'm a masochist, I guess. Things did improve after the hero showed up and I kept thinking there must be something people saw in this to give it such glowing 4 & 5 star reviews but for me...no. It had so many issues and too few redeeming qualities to make it worth the read. I won't be reading this author again.

The Edge of Never J A Redmerski 9781480095533 Books Reviews

My `Blogging Reader's Review'
via(booksmoviesfandoms.wordpress. c o m),

★'The Edge Of Never' is a part of the New Adult genre and it definitely has a nice blend of dynamics in the story. I was already familiar with the author, J.A. Redmerski because of another book series of hers that I love titled `In The Company Of Killers", which I will also be doing a review of in the near future. The one thing I always like to let readers know about is whether you get more than one P.O.V.(point of view) in the story. I am happy to report that yes, you will get both main characters' of the story, Camryn and Andrew's P.O.V.'s.

In `The Edge Of Never' we meet twenty year old Camryn Bennett `Cam' as her friends call her, who lives a pretty average life. She has a couple of close friends that she's known for years. She's always felt like she wanted more out of life, she just never knew what `more' meant to her. Her life has been a roller-coaster of events which include her parents divorce, the death of her boyfriend Ian who she considered to be the love of her life and having her older brother Cole in prison for killing a man in a drunk driving accident.

One night, Cam reluctantly agrees to go out with her long time best friend Natalie to a night club. Natalie's boyfriend Damon, who also is one of Cam's old friends, goes with them to the club known as `The Underground'. Something happens that night, adding to the growing list of reasons that make Cam assess her life in a way that makes her question why she hasn't acted upon that urge inside of her to make changes in her life as well as get some distance from everyone and everything. That feeling of needing a change in her life becomes stronger, making her feel like she must do something about it. And she finally listens to it.

You can't help but feel bad for Cam because she's had so much taken away or pulled apart in her life. Soon after Cam began working at a new job, she decides to do something unexpected and unplanned because of her growing frustrations. Cam had planned to travel around the world with Ian after they finished school but as we know, the future never happened for him. After Ian, she vowed to herself that she would never fall in love again.

She grabs a few minor items, with no actual plan or destination and she sets out on her journey. On this spur-of the-moment trip to `anywhere on a Greyhound', Cam doesn't know that her life will be altered forever once again when she meets a handsome stranger named Andrew Parrish. Their meeting didn't seem like much at first but trust begins to grow between them both, to the point that they become travel buddies during their trip across a handful of states together.

Cam doesn't know that Andrew harbors his own secrets that he has no plans of sharing with her. But why would he? They just met and still plan on going down their own separate paths once they reach their parting destination. They both have their minds set on knowing neither will see each other again once this trip is done. Well, that is what Cam and Andrew keep telling themselves anyway...

This story takes you on the road with Cam and Andrew as they travel and hesitantly get more intrigued with one another during the long bus ride. Somehow the trip begins to heal them and unite them in ways that were unexpected. It seems that as their feelings grow, the harder the connection becomes to ignore. Is it lust or is it love? And will Andrew's secrets be too much for Cam to handle since she has her own baggage to deal with from the life she took a break from?

This is a story about finding your way to where you need to be in life emotionally and physically even if you can't understand where life is taking you. It also takes you on the journey with two people who felt lost in their own lives in different ways but somehow brought each other to a place of healing that they both needed desperately. It's such a beautiful story with quite a few passionate scenes that fit well with the characters themselves and who they are. The story definitely pulled at my emotions and I was completely enamored with the bond that's developed between the characters.

I recommend `The Edge Of Never" to those who like a story beyond just a regular `boy meets girl' kind of love story. I'm sure it will evoke the thrilling, heart-wrenching and satisfying feelings in you as the reader as well. And one final thing... four words will forever remind me of this story Dust In The Wind.)

💕There is a follow-up book to `The Edge Of Never' expected out November 5th, 2013 titled `The Edge Of Always'💕
There will also be a spinoff based on characters introduced in book two titled `SONG OF THE FIREFLIES' (Thanks to J.A. Redmerski for that info!)

My Idea of what "Camryn and Andrew" look like
Gabrielle Wilde as Camryn
Steven McQueen as Andrew Parrish

⭐★⭐★⭐★⭐★⭐★⭐★⭐★⭐★⭐★⭐★⭐★⭐★⭐★⭐★⭐

(This review comes straight from my blog
BooksMoviesFandoms.wordpress. c o m)

Check us out on Twitter @ BooksMoviesFans
I highly recommend this book for anyone who is new to the New Adult Fiction genre and/or who wants to explore what the genre is really about.

(Side Note New Adult Fiction novels are intended for more mature audiences, typically 18-25 years old. These novels often display colorful language and much more detailed sexual themes than you would find in a Young Adult novel. Parents of younger children, consider this my caution to you.)

The Edge of Never is a riveting coming-of-age / self-discovery novel about a girl coming into her own as sexual adult being. Serving as the catalyst for her self discovery is a man who brings out the best (and the worst) in her and teaches her to experience life without hesitations. I think this book explores many issues pertinent facing the New Adult audiences today, such as the gender roles (masculine behavior vs feminine behavior) we assign to our children from a young age, and about female sexuality and the stigmas society places against women as sexual beings.

I feel it is also important to add that some of the things the author says in the book about women's sexual roles sets the feminism movement back about 30 years. If you're overly sensitive to the idea of a woman 'belonging' to her man, I suggest finding another book to read.

Happy Reading!
Crystal -- CrystalKeel.wordpress.com

Mockingjay The Hunger Games Suzanne Collins Books

Before reading The Hunger Games trilogy, I had more than a few people tell me the first two books were good, but the last one was lacking. I couldn't disagree more. The story is harsh, gruesome, and bleak. It had to be. It's a first person account of an individual who has survived two Hunger Games and plays a major role in a revolution. Of course it's going to be brutal. Had the story drawn to a close with Katniss standing majestically with trumpets blaring and flags waving, it would have been completely unrealistic.

I also heard a few people express disappointment in the conclusion of the Katniss/Peeta storyline. I've read people's reviews taking issue with how Katniss and Peeta are represented at the end of Mockingjay, asking "Where's the passion?" Passion? Are they insane? First of all, the story is told in first person by a character who is admittedly not at all comfortable being demonstrative and doesn't respond well to those who are. There was never going to be a hearts/candy/flowers declaration happening here. Peeta has a borderline obssessive love for Katniss throughout most of the trilogy. The way I read the story, by the end of the first Hunger Games, she returns the feeling. Though hesitant to think why she does the things she does, or to state it aloud, she expresses it in so many different ways throughout the remainder of the trilogy, there really is no doubt. Despite the fact that she is suffering major PTSD, she agrees to take on the stress of being the symbol of revolution and take a front line role to bring him back. Regardless of the amount of trauma they both endure, they still eventually turn back to each other. Gale was a strong character, but he had not gone through what Katniss did in the arena and would never have been able to understand that part of her. The time she spends clinging to him and avoiding Peeta is essentially an attempt to return to the person she was before the games (which was never going to happen). Peeta was the walking, living, breathing reminder of the trauma endured. I thought it telling that Peeta returned to Region 12. Like Gale, he could have gone anywhere when it was all over, yet he went where Katniss was. Really, Katniss, Peeta and Haymitch needed each other to become human again (or as human as they were ever going to be). Katniss reminded me of uncles I had who, when they returned from war, sat in a darkened room, staring at a wall day after day for over a year before they could handle being amongst the living again.

I'll admit part of me would have liked President Snow's demise to be more than it was. Considering the amount of suffering he caused, part of me is bloodthirsty enough to have wanted him to suffer a great deal more. There are also characters I would have liked to survive (Finnick, Cinna, and Prim to name a few), but their deaths helped to illustrate the randomness and unfairness of death in wartime.

There are parts of this story we'll never get to see because it is told from Katniss' point of view. We see only what she sees and know only what she thinks is going on. I, for one, would be interested in knowing more about events of the story from Peeta and/or Haymitch's point of view. Peeta's fight back from his memory hijacking would be an intriguing read.

Ultimately, I found this book engaging, infuriating, exhausting, and funny all at the same time. To have had Katniss serene and sweetly declaring life to be sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows would have been absurd. She is with a husband (partner?) whom she loves and is utterly devoted to. She has two children she loves, but is worried what they will think when they know the role their parents played in the past. She and Peeta are happy, but remain somewhat haunted which is perfectly realistic for what the characters have gone through.

Mockingjay The Hunger Games Suzanne Collins Books Reviews

You know a book is good when it crawls inside your head and snuggles there. When you are thinking through it as you read it, and thinking about it long after you’ve read the last word on the last page.

I had little to no expectations when I first started reading the Hunger Games Trilogy. If a book is trending and seems interesting, I will add it to my “to read” list. This is how I first started reading Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games. After finishing Mockingjay, I was blown away. All I could think was, how many of the YA readers will understand the nuances of Collins’ message?

She hooked you in with the “will she or won’t she” scenario. “Will she or won’t she” pick Peeta or Gale? “Will she or won’t she” survive a game that does not allow for love to shine through? Those questions get you through the first book, and possibly half way through the second book, but those same questions are a moot point with Mockingjay.

Mockingjay stripped you of your hopeless romantic naiveté. There is no room for romance when the world is collapsing around you. There is barely room to breathe. There are no good guys or bad guys, only survivors. Mockingjay asks difficult moral questions can man ever hold seats of power without corruption? Can war ever actually solve a dispute? At what price is man willing to pay for absolute power?

I won’t even go into Collins’ varied symbolisms. Part of the pleasure of reading is finding them yourselves and asking yourself what the author is telling you, the reader. It becomes a communication between the author and the reader. It makes the novel Mockingjay even more important because it is written for younger readers, our future, those that will decide the world events of tomorrow. Collins does all this without a lecture, without loosing her characters or her plot, she has crafted an incredibly well written story that I would gladly recommend to anyone who asks.

After I finished reading Mockingjay I had the same feeling as I had when I finished reading The Lord of the Flies so many years ago. Yes, I am comparing Mockingjay to a classic. There is no way around it. Mockingjay, like Lord of the Flies, asks you deep moralistic questions through the point of view of young characters. This is simply another great novel that makes you go hmmm.

My favorite quotes from Mockingjay
“Frankly, our ancestors don’t seem much to brag about. I mean, look at the state they left us in, with the wars and the broken planet. Clearly, they didn’t care about what would happen to the people who came after them.”

“It’s a saying from thousands of years ago, written in a language called Latin about a place called Rome,” he explains. “Panem et Circuses translates into ‘Bread and Circuses’. The writer was saying in return for full bellies and entertainment, his people had given up their political responsibilities and therefore their power.”

“Something is significantly wrong with a creature that sacrifices its children’s lives to settle its differences.”
Imagine a lottery. It’s sort of like a draft lottery they had during the Viet Nam War. It’s sort of like the lottery in Shirley Jackson’s short story where the winner is stoned to death.
There are two “winners” in this Hunger Games lottery, a girl and a boy. Actually they are selected - drafted. Their names are pulled out at random. They get to compete with eleven other boys and eleven other girls in a war- games-type arena. There can only be one winner in the Hunger Games - the person still alive at the end of the games.
We follow Katniss, a girl from District Twelve, the poorest district, and Peeta, the baker’s son, from the same district. Peeta has had a crush on Katniss since she was five years old. She owes him for giving her bread when her family was starving. She feels she should repay this debt. Now they might be forced to kill each other.
The pageantry leading up to the games at times resembles a beauty contest, at times resembles training for participation in a less-lethal sport and at times it resembles preparation for a bullfight.
This is a terrifying story, but it’s also a life enhancing a story as the 24 children (ages 12 to 18) in the games sometimes form alliances based on friendship or need. It’s hard to trust anyone knowing that person might soon become your killer.
There’s are lessons in survival here. There’s also romance as Katniss isn’t sure if she loves Peeta, but she cares for him enough to fight for his survival as well as her own.
I don’t know what it is about rockstar romances that I love so much. But I can never seem to get enough of them! Having read this author’s previous rockstar romance series, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book. I was also very excited that we were finally be getting Ethan’s story, not to mention the blurb had made this story even more intriguing. Ethan and Maci’s story had completely taken me by surprise. The Power To Break had everything that I love about these types of romances. This author’s impeccable writing and angst-filled storyline had me hooked from the first page to the last. Not mention, Ethan’s POV always had me laughing and falling for him so much more. Despite his flaws and bad boy behavior, there was something about Ethan that made impossible not to fall in love with him. In addition, I couldn’t get enough of the Ethan and Maci’s banter and undeniable chemistry. The love and hate relationship between these two characters definitely made for some entertaining moments throughout the story. Their relationship was filled with ups and downs. But I loved seeing how they slowly began to let their guards down and open up to each other. Their journey will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat! Even though this story does end in a cliffhanger, I was very pleased with the ending and excited to see what awaits Ethan and Maci in the next book. Overall, this rockstar romance is not one you want to miss. Ethan Fuller is one book boyfriend that will always leave you craving for more!
5 Flaming Stars for this Rock Star Romance
Ethan Fuller - drummer of VAIL. We were first introduced to VAIL in A Little Like Destiny Series. Ethan's notorious for being #oneanddone, #hititandquitit, #nailandbail, and #humpanddump kind of guy. There were times when I totally wanted to slap Ethan. He’s cocky, arrogant and confident. Yet he doesn’t always get what he wants …
#FlamingDrumsticks

He’s always trying to keep things light and often reverts to what he knows about best – sex.

Ethan also tells it like it is

You know that old saying about sticks and stones? Yeah, they're total BS - words can cut like a knife. The damage a few words can do can cause a person to shatter and break .

Good girl, Dani Mayne turned into rockstar, Maci Dane.
When Dani is hurt by the very person she’s been crushing on, what does she do? She runs and ultimately reinvents herself into Maci Dane in the wake of heartache, loss and devastation. Her reality is blinded by hatred and revenge. Maci’s got attitude a mile long and the confidence to back it up, or at least that what she lets everyone else believe. It’s amazing what you might see when she doesn’t know you’re watching.

The past and present collide in an epic flurry of rocker life and off-the-charts chemistry. #TTF
Secrets are kept and lies are told.

Revenge is so sweet but the thing about revenge, it often backfires on the one seeking it. What happens when you get caught up in your own web of lies?

To move on from the past and all the hurtful things endured, we must first forgive.. both ourselves and those who we feel have done us wrong. Will she get her revenge? Will she forgive herself? Will she forgive those who have wronged her?

Bad news - There’s a cliffhanger, but you see it coming or you at least sense it.
Good news – the next book is slated to release April 23rd.

See this is one of the reasons why I love Lisa Suzanne’s writing style. She has so much in her stories that it requires another book (which means lots of juicy morsels for my little eyes to devour) BUT, she also doesn’t keep you waiting too long. And as we romance readers know, there is something to delayed gratification, right?!
No offense to Mark Ashton(A Little Like Destiny Series by Lisa Suzanne- read it now if you haven’t!), by Ethan Fuller May have just stole his place as my favorite Rockstar! He’s absolutely amazing, and has a wonderful heart. Maci Dane is a rising star, who sets her sights on Ethan, but she has ulterior motives. When she headlines for Vail, and lines get crossed and blurred, will she stick to her plan? Read this absolutely amazing story to find out!
I enjoyed this book. But I always have a soft spot for rockstar books. The characters and the story were all so good to read and if feels like we are experiencing this with them. Dani (Maci) and Ethan are learning that you can't quite escape your past to move forward with your future. Lies, deceit, love all tangles up. Will they be able to to have a future once all the truth are revealed. This book I couldn't put down and you will love it if you enjoy rockstars and drama. Lots of emotions and drama pact filled. Let's not forget it's hot and sexy too. I can't wait for the next book. II've been telling my friends about this book. Yes!
Do you ever believe in fate? Soulmates? That invisible thread? You know the one that is tied between you and an other person that through time will always bring you back to the person you are supposed to be with? That other half of your soul? I know I personally do because I have been lucky enough to find that. Maci Dane is an up and coming rock star and by all accounts should be happy with her life. But once you delve into the reasons behind her super-stardom you see a scared, angry woman who is bent on revenge. THAT revenge is now within her grasp but will that invisible thread, that unbreakable thread tie her and the subject of her revenge in a way that is totally unexpected. Ethan is a rock star with the band Vail (who if you have read the Destiny series you will recognize). His inability to express how he felt for the one girl he has ever loved has him spiraling and unable to be more than a one and done kind of guy. What happens when secrets are revealed? This story is about the power of words. Once spoken they can change the trajectory of a persons life....even if you never meant them...even if you don't even know that the subject of your words actually heard them. It ends on a lovely cliffhanger (and I am being quite sarcastic right now...I may not speak to the author until the next book comes out lol) but the book is beautifully written and I DO believe that the author gets better and better with every book I read, as impossible as it may seem.
I was more than 60% through the book before it engaged me. Page after page of a meek housewife hallucinating (or remembering?) and hints of a dark and troubled past. Her husband begs her to take her pills - he even puts them in her mouth but she doesn't swallow them because she wants to come to grips with the strong images and flashbacks that torment her. I was rooting for her to take her pills just like her husband so I wouldn't have to read any more of this. But then we start to believe that Marta is not hallucinating but rather remembering real events that happened before her marriage - terrible events involving her husband. The reader starts to believe that maybe Marta is not "crazy" but rather the victim of a terrible crime...
The ending is terribly disappointing - completely unsatisfying. I understand that the author wanted to explore the complex psychology of memory, but I want good guys to prevail and bad guys to be punished. And I didn't get that satisfaction.

How to Be a Good Wife edition by Emma Chapman Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The characters in this novel are well crafted...especially the character of Marta aka Elise. Is she losing her grip on reality or was she subjected to the horrors she "thinks" she remembers? Although it begins slowly and rather groggily, as the story unfolds it takes on a nice pace. I do have say that the ending was somewhat disappointing, but appropriate. This was an easy read and entertaining. I would recommend this to others
A little confusing in the beginning but I kept with it. The middle was interesting and then the ending was unexpected. Everyone is going to have a different take on this book.
Very slow, and hard to get into. Never really let you know what was going on. Felt like I didn't know much of what was going on even after finishing it. Left everything hanging without any explanations.
Five stars absolutely! Oh, my......what a wonderful idea for a book. My heart was heavy at times for Marta. I didn't care for her husband or his mother one bit! And then as Elise is presented, my heart hurts so for her. But we would do anything for our children, as Elise does. The ending was perfect.......what else could a mother do to not see the pain in her son's eyes. A great book that I wish would get the topic of mental health more out in the open. To get people to see it not as an illness but as a question of health. Our government, our healthcare providers, and we ourselves should stand up for recognizing it in this way and not to see it as something shameful. And to see it not be abused as this book so beautifully illustrates.
Icy and dark, this is psychological suspense that the average reader may not "get." The sly author persuades us to alternate between sympathetically relating to Marta, a Norwegian housewife expected to toe the line for her husband of 25 years, and also being a bit repulsed by her increasingly erratic behavior.

At her husband's insistence, Marta has dutifully been taking little pink pills several times a day for decades. She has memorized and performed each and every timed household chore from the handbook she received on her wedding day, a gift from her cold, perfectionist mother-in-law.

Lately, however, Marta has decided to see what happens without the meds. Her only child has moved away, and with time on her hands, she begind to secretly spit out the pills, even after Hector has checked her mouth.

With her mind starting to finally bob to the surface of clarity, Marta sees things that others do not. The reader must decide whether we are witness to a confused view of lifting fog or a paranoid trip into madness. Whether she is insane or not, we cannot help but hope that Marta finds herself fully in control of her emotions and satisfied with her role as, if not a good wife, then a good mother.

Oustanding slow-burner - look for clues as early as page 2!
There's a lot of disagreement on this book, so I had to throw my two cents in. Yes, it's well written; yes, the story probably spends too much time on the protagonist's repetitive visions/hallucinations before the plot takes a turn about three quarters of the way through. But I did find the book involving and enjoyable.

The ending is the biggest point of controversy, and without saying too much, I agree with those who didn't find it satisfying. The ambiguity is only part of the problem; I'm pretty sure in my own mind whether the heroine is delusional or not. But either way you slice it, the resolution leaves quite a bit to be desired. But Chapman is a talented writer, and I thought the book was worth the time.
Marta is a middle-aged housewife living in an unnamed Scandinavian town with her husband. Throughout her marriage she has always strived to be the best possible wife to her husband Hector but she suddenly begins to have terrifying hallucinations that make her want to break free from her idyllic country life.

Chapman had a very good idea but did not execute it well. Poor execution leads to the swift changes in year and place being jarring and passages feel disjointed.

Chapman's writing style is simple and laconic so not much is achieved in terms of creating a tense atmosphere hence the book never really feels like the tension filled psychological thriller it tries to be.
I was more than 60% through the book before it engaged me. Nikki Giovanni celebrates her 65 years with 65 poems following in the tradition of her well-received earlier release, Love Poems, and expands on the nuances, notions, and manifestations of love. She taps into the senses: the instant physiological reactions of seeing a lover or loved one regardless of whether they are a revered figure (in an ode to "Free Huey") or familial as reflected in "Christmas Laughter." Tastes are echoed in the references of food seasoned just right and prepared with the right dose of tender loving care. Hearing and touching are featured in several pieces devoted to jazz and the influence music has in the art of love and loving. "Love Luther" is dedicated to the love that Luther Vandross inspired with his melodic voice and songs that begat a generation. She does not let us forget the power of memories elicited from the whiff of a lover's cologne, smell of "him" on his shirt, or revisiting his essence on the sweat-soaked sheets the morning after. Filled with metaphors Miss Nikki reminds us that love can be experienced everywhere at all times from many sources even our ancestors, our families, our friends, ourselves. We must be patient and mindful of it for it is a loving balm that can strengthen and renew us when we need it most.

Opening and closing with reflections on the Virginia Tech massacre, she shares her observations and lessons learned that love can lift anyone from the depth of tragedy. There are other works in the collection that mention the peace and protection love can bring, the sacrifices loved ones make, and the joy it offers. There is something for everyone in this compact offering because she covers the concept in many settings and from many angles. Bicycles is a short, sweet, enjoyable collection that is easily absorbed into the soul.

Reviewed by Phyllis
January 19, 2009
APOOO BookClub

Bicycles Love Poems Nikki Giovanni Books Reviews

This collection is very special to me. I have 2 copies. I highly recommend Niki Giovanni's work.
My Book Club read it, shared our favorite poems & discussed them. It was a great discussion! I could not imagine how we were going to discuss a book of poems but it worked very well.
Amazing poems for everyone to enjoy!
One of my favorite poet. I have read all of her books, but I missed Bicycles.
Nikki Giovanni touches your heart, mind and soul.
Powerful in their lightness and wit, these poems delight!
I grew up on Nikki in the 60s/70s learing what poetry is about and understanding what it is to be a little black girl growing up in the 70x in the civil rights movement. Reading Nikki G. takes to you a place that I can't decribe. Her words talk to you, for you, about you!!!! I dont' ready her love poems all a one time. I have it on my iPad so as I commute to/from work/home I open for encouragement, for reinforcement about my love for myself, my husband, my family, for life.

THANK YOU NIKKI G. YOU TRULY ARE A GOD-SEND!!!!
As always, another profound work by Nikki Giovanni. She touches on all the various forms of love not just the romantic sense. Also, she captures the emotions those different forms of love can invoke. From unreciprocated love, to the love we have for martyrs, love of certain forms of music...this book emcompasses love and life.

Borrower of the Night A Vicky Bliss Novel of Suspense Vicky Bliss Series Elizabeth Peters 9780061656071 Books

This is the first novel introducing the character Vicky Bliss, an art historian and amateur detective. Like the books that follow, the mystery involves a missing historic artifact that she & her boy friend, who is also a history professor, are competing to find in an old castle in Germany. The story is told by Vicky so you don't know any facts until she discovers them. Overall this is a fun read due to the humor that is a key element in the enjoyment of this story. Based on this book, I went on to read the five books in the Vicky Bliss series. I have enjoyed all of them.

Borrower of the Night A Vicky Bliss Novel of Suspense Vicky Bliss Series Elizabeth Peters 9780061656071 Books Reviews

Vicky Bliss is a strong, intelligent, very independent art historian. In this book she and several other adventurers take on the search for a loist art treasure. A rousing start for the series!
This is the first book in the Vicky Bliss series, and even though it's been around for a while, there's not much in it to 'date' it, so it's just as enjoyable now as it was when first published. Elizabeth Peters wrote this, and a couple of sequels, then let the Vicky Bliss novels rest for many years, until returning to them again fairly recently. There's no trace of the gap. All are filled with humor and wit. The characters are well-rounded and (mostly!) believeable. The mystery is always tied to the art/antiquities world, and the snapshots of the foreign cities and countries in which the action occurs are always vivid. Elizabeth Peters is a 'must-read' author for those who like a light, fun, take on mystery and romance (with just a dash of education thrown in).
This is the introductory book of the Vicky Bliss series. Dr Bliss is an art historian teaching in a small midwestern college. She has decided never to marry since she has discovered that the only thing that intimidates most men more than a tall woman is a smart tall woman and Vicky is both. Another member of the faculty, Tony, is also tall and smart and quite taken with Vicky. The two stumble across a reference to a long missing art work and are soon off to Germany to track it down, in competition with each other. They find that they are not the only ones seeking this piece. The trail leads to a castle turned hotel complete with a ghost, secret passages and damsel in distress.
This book was written in 1973 and does show its age a bit. If you are looking for the mysterious John Smythe of the later books he does not appear here but we do get the first appearance of Schmidt. While she is not as captivating a Amelia Peabody, Vicky is charming in her own way. The series makes for an enjoyable, light hearted read.
I love all of the Vicki Bliss books and am starting to reread them I had forgotten how good the first one was until I did reread it. Thankfully, it had been so long since I read it for the first time (decades), it was like reading it for the first time and none of the important plot points were recalled. If you read it, you will want the others, so just be forewarned.
Audio Version
Story - Excellent, good flow, nice characters, good setting since I've never been to the part of Germany in the book or read about it I had no preconceptions. I like the reader, she did an excellent job of reading the book, not playing the actress that over does it. She doesn't try to do a man voice, since the way the book was written it wasn't necessary. The only problem I had was the main character going on and on about being tall and well developed and never wanting to get married. She seemed to enjoy saying it over and over. But other than that it was enjoyable.
This is the first story in the Vicky Bliss mystery series and although, it's not absolutely necessary to read the stories in chronological order, it really does help to understand the background of the main characters and frankly, it makes reading the books even more enjoyable. In BORROWER OF THE NIGHT, Vicky Bliss, art historian and college professor finds a reference in a book that might lead to the discovery of a missing masterpiece by Tilman Riemenschneider, a very famous German sculptor.
Tony, Vicky's boyfriend and colleague, challenges her to see which of them can locate the missing treasure first. Their information leads them to visit Rothenberg, Germany, and an ancient castle. Several other people are also on the trail of the missing treasure, including Herr Dr. Schmidt and a wealthy American named George. Gorgeous Vicky is in her glory when she collects many admirers among the group, but the beautiful young countess who lives in the castle seems to have captured the interest of Tony. What can be more sinister than an old castle with secret passages and a history of evil inhabitants?
I listened to the audiotapes of this book read by Barbara Rosenblat. It was helpful to hear the pronunciations of the German words and her narration was wonderful.
If you're intrigued enough to want to read this series in order, here they are BORROWER OF THE NIGHT, STREET OF THE FIVE MOONS, SILHOUETTE IN SCARLET, TROJAN GOLD and NIGHT TRAIN TO MEMPHIS. These are all excellent stories and I only wish that Elizabeth Peters would write more of them.
I hope that putting Elizabeth Peters on will bring her works to a new audience of young readers. I have loved her Vicky Bliss and Amelia Peabody series, as well as so many of her individual novels written as either Elizabeth Peters or Barbara Michaels. I have read and re-read these books for decades. They just take me to a happy place. I am so happy to add this book and many of the others to my collection so that I can ready them at any time...without trying to hunt down my paperback versions.
I know this wasn't a review of this specific book, but I just wanted to share my pleasure at finding these books on ...where they can't mildew.

Betraying Season Marissa Doyle Books

POSSIBLE SPOILERS
Betraying Season (Leland Sisters) by Marissa Doyle is the second book following the Leland Sisters, this time just focused on Penelope. Penelope travels to Ireland with her previous governess to learn more about magic and become a better student at it. While there, she meets Niall Keating who begins to court her, and distract her and her studies. But it seems Niall isn't acting on his own accord and Penelope might be involved in an evil plot against the Queen.

I guess I should mention that it's been a while since I read Bewitching Season and that may affect my score. I'm pretty sure I enjoyed it, even though there were some mistakes with it. Maybe that's my problem because even though Betraying Season wasn't bad, it was so clichéd and it got on my nerves after a while.

I was sorta hoping for a plot that was different and had some twists and turns to it, but it was pretty obvious what was going to happen from the beginning. Lady Keating was plotting something evil, Niall would have to flirt with Penelope and make her fall in love with him, he'd end up falling in love with her along the way, and everything will end up perfectly. And it's such a clichéd plot that it irked me that I could predict everything that was happening. Why can't authors think of an original plot?

There was a bit more romance and steaminess in here than it was in Bewitching Season. One way that Niall tries to "save" Penelope is to try to take her virtue. Penelope has to be a virgin in order for Lady Keating's plan to work. So, there's a bit more... steam involved than in Bewitching Season because of that. Not that there's so much that it's more adult. It's a bit stronger PG rating than Bewitching Season was.

And to be honest, that whole save a woman's virtue by sleeping with her was so clichéd and not necessary needed. I thought the plot have been a bit better and not involved virginity vital to it. I kept rolling my eyes whenever I read about Niall volunteering to save her virtue.

However, it was nice to read more about the magic, different types of magic and more of a history of everything too. Bewitching Season didn't have much of anything.

There was also way too many adverbs for my taste. I wanted a story that was shown, not told to me.

Overall, it's cheesy, it's clichéd, it's forgettable, but it does have some interesting things and can hold attention enough. I'd give Bewitching Season a three star rating and since this wasn't as good, I guess it'll get a two star rating.

Betraying Season Marissa Doyle Books Reviews

I picked up this book and could not put it down!!! i enjoyed it just as much as the first book the main character has a great personality. I enjoyed the ending because it tied up loose ends and it left me wanting more but because it was a good book not because the author does not give u enough information. It was a great book and i would recommend it to anybody!!!
I know there is a book Three, cant wait to get it. I love the story lines and how Marissa put everything together.
Different, but a good read. I enjoyed the twist of the magical interest. I wished for more description of the settings for visual effect.
Entertaining and fun read. Book was in excellent condition.
Book arrived in good shape. Mum was pleased as it is hard to find and a part of a set she needed. Thank you
I love Marissa's style. Bewitching Season is in the highest calibur but unfortunately Betraying Season doesn't reach the height of its predecessor--at least for me. What let me down was the final confrontation with Lady Keating. (Oh, watch out for spoilers in the rest of this.) Pen didn't tell her off. Persy set the bar high with her conversation with Michael Carrighar while they were battling. Pen just wondered how long she had to say mental goodbyes to her loved ones. Why didn't she stand up for herself and put LK in her place? Otherwise I was very engaged by Betraying Season. Niall is definitely stimulating.
Oh, and since my name might give the wrong impressions I better make it clear that I am a girl.
I read the first book in this series, Bewitching Season, and enjoyed it tremendously. While many sequels fail to live up to the first book, this was definitely not the case here - in fact, I like Betraying Season even better (6 stars!!!). Penelope (Pen) is the focus of this book and heads off to Ireland to study magic. She is determined to apply herself to her studies so that she can become as good at magic as her sister Percy. Instead of studying with her former governess, Pen has a new teacher and joins a group of young men who are also studying magic. Of course these "charming" fellows clearly think she is in over her head and make things as difficult as possible. Adding to her feelings of inadequacy, Pen's former governess seems to be sleeping all the time and just isn't available for any girl talk.

So, what's a girl to do? Well, fall in love, of course! Pen meets Niall Keating and they are immediately attracted to one another. Their relationship is encouraged by Lady Keating who seems more than happy to escort Pen around town, have her over for tea, etc. From this point on you expect a lovely romance, but that just isn't in the cards. Marissa Doyle takes you on a journey of love, deceit and powerful magic as Penelope Leland discovers her inner core of strength.

Like Bewitching Season, Betraying Season will appeal to a wide range of ages from teen to adult. The story moves along at a wonderful pace and I found it really hard to put the book down. This is a great series of books and I would recommend reading both books if you get the chance!
